Beach Escape Ideas from Melissa

Hi Everyone,

I’ve received some great suggestions for my next luxury beach holiday, but wondered if I should go further afield… somewhere more exotic. What do you think? Have you been to any gorgeous beaches in Australia or the Cook Islands?

I hear there are some fabulously luxurious places to stay in the Cook Islands within a few steps of glistening white sandy beaches and clear turquoise lagoons. Australia has gorgeous beaches too, but where to go? A friend of mine suggested going horseback riding or whale watching off the Central Coast beaches north of Sydney, but I don’t know much about that coast… do you? In fact, I don’t know much about Australia at all, so if you have experienced a great beach destination in Australia PLEASE let me know!

Looking through the SLH website I’ve discovered that you can spot nesting Olive Ridley turtles on the unspoilt white sands of Mandrem beach in India; take a boat to the little-explored powder-soft shores of Koh Rong Saloem in Cambodia; or just spend the day lounging on the seven-kilometre-long sandy beach of Hua Hin in Thailand.

They all sound tempting. Have you been to any exotic locations that offer luxury boutique hotel accommodation right next to a beach?

Can’t wait to hear from you, so don’t forget to leave a comment.

  1. Bondi beach is definately worth a visit, with its sandy beaches and surf and is located just seven kilometers from Sydney’s central business district. The Campbell Parade spans the length of the beach and has several cafes, restaurants, shops and tourist outlets. To keep up our holiday momentum we even decided to take up some surfing lessons with the professionals.

The west coast of Australia also has some amazing beaches. Cottesloe beach is Perths best, and in the South West is the beautiful Smiths Beach in the Margaret River Wine region. This region is the west coast mecca for food, wine and surf, but still offers secluded enclaves for peace and privacy. I love this region – one of my favourite places on the planet.

  3. Great beach resorts – luxury hotel at Beach side are a wonderful experience.

I just came home from the Pacific Resort Aitutaki and had the most amazing trip. The location of the Cook Islands is breathtaking, the local community is extremely inviting, and the service and amenities of the resort itself are one of the best in the world. Highly Recommended.

Cook Islands are beautiful. Stayed on Rarotonga for a couple of nights but you must go to Aitutaki for a couple of nights as well. The Pacific Resort Aitutaki has just a dozen beachside bungalows, all just steps from a beautiful white sand beach beside an amazing crystal clear lagoon. You can sit in the reastaurant at night and watch the locals catching their dinner on the reef, laze by the infinity pool in the afternoon or do what we did and rent the island tqxi (there is only one) and take a tour of the island – marvelous. The staff are great, from meeting you at the small airport to seeing you off nothing was too much trouble.

Aitutaki Lagoon is a must see place – the archetypal coral reef lagoon with stunning white sand beaches and clear water with an excellent slh – Aitutaki Lagoon Resort. You get there via Rarotonga which is a volcanic island, totally different to Aitutaki but just as beautiful

  11. Hi Mellisa,

If u hvnt been to Goa, India…..u hv missed something really exotic! Some of the south Goa beaches are very nude & vulnerable….the waters are crystal clear & great for soul searching experiences!

  12. Kims Hideaway near Byron Bay – right on the beach.. its a SLH thats why.. fantastic standard..

  13. Sydney’s northern beaches can’t be beaten.. for starters.. Manly – catch a ferry from Circular Quay – a great way to see the Opera House and the Bridge, and the Heads, and arrive at Manly in style. A fantastic surf beach.. Then there’s Balmoral.. BEST fish n chips ever.. Bottom of the Harbour Cafe.. mmm! And Bathers Pavillion, for that ulimate dining experience. Of course, there are hidden pockets of beaches all the way up to Palm Beach.. this is the ultimate place for a house! Ooh, Aah,..
Coming East.. Bondi with its iconic Iceberg’s restaurant – gosh.. mind blowing! then there’s Tamarama Beach.. oh my how I miss summer! – thanks for the opportunity for me to have a trip down memory lane. Come back summer, all is forgiven. Miss you already, and we’re only in Autumn!

If you’re searching for something really special, try Ratua Private island, right between the coasts of Australia and the Fijis ( In case you want to stay more closer to the continent, I recommend the Whitsunday Islands or, for a more adventourus safari-like vacation, head to Fraser island (and make sure not to miss the spectacular beach of Lake McKenzie).

Cook Islands (which are NOT in Australia, they are independent and have close links to New Zealand) are just beautiful. We went to Rarotonga a few years ago, stayed in a gorgeous small luxury hotel next to Muri beach. Our villa even had a little stream running through it, with a bridge over it. Our lounge doors opened out onto a deck right on the beach, with 2 canoes parked there for our use. I used to love waking up in the morning and looking out to sea, watching the waves pound against the coral reef offshore. It was mesmerising – a once-in-a-lifetime holiday which we still talk about. We have heard that Aitutaki is amazing, so next time we head to the Cook Islands we hope to go there. Vanuatu is another place we have visited, we stayed on the main island near Port Vila. Swimming in warm waters with tropical fish all around you, is just magical. People were lovely too – really friendly, and the fact that the island is half-English, half-French speaking, gives it a unique cultural appeal..

  16. I read this post it was really amazing. Every one knows Australia is very nice country and there are many beaches & luxuries hotels which attract to tourists. Cook Islands is one of the Australian island who has fabulous luxurious beach.

  17. We’re loving the Queensland islands for beaches -adore Qualia on Hamilton and ahh, it is an SLH hotel. No wonder it is so good

Any thoughts?
